1. Create a strong password.
Chances are, you already have your password created for facebook, however it is advisable for you to make sure your facebook password is not the same as other password you use for different sites. I have posted an article on how to create a strong password and how to make your passwords different for all sites and yet remember it affectively, which I really recommend you to read it here.
2. Confirm your mobile number.
Confirming your mobile number is one of many ways to enhance your account security on facebook. This way, even if you forget your password, facebook will be able to reset your password via SMS.
There is also a way to avoid anyone to have access to your account even if they know your password. This is also one advantage of confirming your mobile number. Learn it here. (How to add mobile number to facebook).
3. Active secure browsing NOW.
To make sure the active browsing is safe, you can turn on the secure browsing option. By doing this, you automatically limit all external applications that are integrated with facebook from ding any harm or taking your personal information without your knowledge of approval. Click here to learn how to turn on the secure browsing option on. (Click on the drop down menu from the top right corner of your facebook and go to Account Settings, select security from the left menu, at the Secure Browsing section, click on the Edit link at the right. The option panel will appear, ‘check’ the box Browse Facebook on a secure connection then click on the Save Changes button.)
4. Activate Login Approval.
Login approval is an extended security feature offered by facebook, and it will require you to enter a temporary security code each time you try to login to your facebook account from unrecognized devices. Which is really cool security feature by the way, not everyone is aware of it though. I highly recommend you to enable this feature on facebook. To activate this feature, go to Account settings>>Security>>Login Approvals and click on the ‘Edit’ button. An option to activate Login Approvals will appear, tick the check box to activate. A pop up window will appear with descriptions of login approvals, click on the ‘Set up Now’ button to continue. If you already register your mobile number, facebook will automatically
send you a code via SMS. And now, you have to enter this code to the provided box and click ‘Submit Code’. Now you have successfully completed with Login Approvals request, click ‘Next’ to continue. Next, facebook will offer you to setup a Code generator from your mobile phone; this is useful in case you are unable to provide the code they send you when you try to login. This can happen for number of reasons, your battery may die and you won’t be able to receive their SMS, or you may forgot your phone at home and still want to access your facebook account on school computer, or your phone got lost in a middle of nowhere or bla bla bla. 5. Disconnect previous active sessions.
The good thing about facebook is that, it lets you know about your previous active sessions, where you login from and what device you used to access your facebook account. Now to make sure your facebook account is safe, edit active sessions. Go to ‘Account Settings’ Security page, look for ‘Active sessions’ and click on edit. You will see a list of all your previous sessions together with your current active session at the top of the list. Click on the link ‘End Activity’ to kill the activities from other devices.
6. Activate Private Browsing.
Almost all browsers have this private browsing option. And by activating this option, you can double your security. Your activity will not be logged into browser history. The menu of this may differ from browser to browser but I’m sure it’s there somewhere on your browser. For example: (Safari: if you use mac and your browser is Safari, go to its me and click ‘Private Browsing’. Firefox: go to
tools>Start private browsing. Chrome: go to file>New incognito window)
7. Keep me logged in.
At the very first page of facebook where you fill your information to log in, there is a small box that says ‘Keep me Logged in’. Make sure this box is unchecked. Then log in as you used to login, as usual. It will ask you for your email or phone and password every time you try to login. This helps you to be sure that your account is safe even if someone else uses your computer.
8. Avoid Spam links.
There are lots of scams going on here on facebook. Facebook is a large social network, which makes it a perfect place for scammer to do their job. But facebook is not that easy as they take this matter very seriously. The type of attacks includes direct or indirect phishing links that will redirect you to fake websites, malicious links that could retrieve your personal information or even harm your computer. There are many ways you can protect yourself from this type of security problem. a. Never click on suspicious links whenever or wherever you find it, even if it came from your friends. This may happen without them noticing. This includes all links that appear in your facebook chat messages, friend’s status post etc. b. Never ever give out your user name or password to anyone, including websites with suspicious links and layouts. c. Check out the address bar of your browser when logging in. login only at www.facebook.com and not from any other link or website unless you are accessing via facebook App.
d. Update your browser to its latest version to ensure your browser’s security is up to date so it would detect and alert you with a warning when you are navigating a suspected phishing site

9. Logout.
This is the most important of all by the way. Lastly don’t forget to click the ‘logout’ link.
